Curiosity is where our work begins: Working together with engineers and architects, we push the boundaries of materials, combine granite with high-tech solutions and develop ideas until they feel self-evident. When no existing solution meets the challenge, that’s when our real work begins.
Creative LAB°

With our in-house engineering department and nearly 100 years of experience working with natural stone, we turn radical designs into built solutions.

Innovation has shaped Kusser from the beginning. When Josef Kusser Sr. developed the floating granite sphere, he showed that stone could move in ways no one expected. That early breakthrough set the tone for what followed: a company that keeps pushing material boundaries and turns uncommon ideas into practical solutions.  Today, that mindset continues through in-house engineering, deep material knowledge, and decades of development across water features, solid natural stone pools, structural stone systems, and custom-built solutions.

Some projects begin where standard solutions end. That is where Kusser does its strongest work. New systems are developed when the market does not offer the right answer, whether the challenge lies in structure, fabrication, movement, water behavior, or long-term durability. Curiosity drives the process, but engineering gives it form. This way of working has led to innovations across very different applications.

With Kusser.

Many of these developments began in collaboration with our customers. Kusser works with architects, landscape architects, engineers, aquatic planners, artists, and clients who are looking for more than standard solutions. Some projects require technical refinement. Others need a new construction approach altogether. In both cases, the process depends on open exchange and a willingness to test ideas until they become buildable. Over the years, this work has also included research partnerships and specialist engineering collaborations. The goal is always the same: to turn strong concepts into reliable systems with lasting relevance.

INNOVATIONS

1986 – Floating sphere fountain
patent drawings of a sphere grinding machine

The world’s first floating granite sphere fountain is produced. A new category of water sculptures is created.

1999 – Magdeburg Earth’s Axis
Earth Axis sculpture in Magdeburg

A 12-meter-long rotating granite structure is installed. This marked the first time post-tensioned granite of such a size had been displayed.

2005 – Kusser fountain system

With the Potomac Yard project (USA), Kusser developed a modular method of solid construction for fountain systems, and, in so doing has set new standards in terms of installation time and service life.

2007 – Rosenheim Granite Bridge
fabrication of a post-tensioned granite bridge

An important milestone in granite bridge construction: A post-tensioned footbridge in Rosenheim, constructed in cooperation with ZM-I.

2019 – KUSSERPOOL®

The prefabricated pool made from solid granite was introduced to the market. It combines engineering skill with exclusive design.

2021 – Haus Marteau

A concert hall equipped with 36 free-form granite elements. The complex acoustic system is created using CNC technology and a steel substructure.

2025 – Wood-granite composite bridge
a wood granite bridge between two houses

A newly developed bridge system, created in collaboration with Wagmann Ingenieure, in which solid granite slabs are permanently connected to a wooden structure. The result is lightweight, easy-to-install components with a long service life and natural look.

Innovation rarely starts from scratch. It grows from experience, curiosity, and the courage to rethink what already exists.

Sustainable Since 1929

Sustainability at Kusser has always meant more than reducing emissions. It means working with a long-term sense of responsibility—for the material, for the people who work with it, and for the projects that depend on it. Granite is extracted, processed, and built with the expectation that it will last. That same mindset shapes how knowledge is passed on, how partnerships are maintained, and how new ideas are developed without losing sight of origin and durability. Apprenticeships, technical training, reliable business relationships, and durable construction all belong to the same logic. Good work should hold up over time. So should the systems, structures, and collaborations behind it.

Businessportrait of a CEO

Now in the third generation, Josef Kusser leads the family business. Few people know the company as thoroughly as he does. As a result, he has an answer to nearly every question. Originally trained as a stonemason, he understands every aspect of the craft — from hands-on production to financial management.
